A new coil that tastes burnt on the very first puff is almost never faulty. It has simply been fired too early, before its cotton had time to fill with e-liquid. Knowing how to prime a vape coil is what separates a coil that runs its full life from one ruined in three seconds.

What it means to prime a vape coil
To prime a vape coil is to saturate its cotton with e-liquid before the very first firing. Straight out of the packet, that cotton is bone dry. Nothing sits between the heating element and bare fibre the moment the battery sends current through it.
E-liquid does two jobs inside the chamber. It is the substance being turned into vapour, but it also cools the cotton continuously as it evaporates. Dry cotton has nothing to evaporate, so it takes the heat directly and chars.
Priming is therefore not an optional nicety. It is the step that puts the coil into the conditions it was designed for, before a single inhale. A properly primed coil starts from a clean baseline, and a coil fired dry never recovers.
Why a new coil burns out so quickly

How to prime a vape coil step by step
The method takes four stages and needs no tools at all. It applies to the vast majority of prefabricated coils on the British market, whatever the brand on the box.
Start with the drops. Before fitting the coil into the tank, find the openings around its body: these are the juice holes, also called wicking ports, and the cotton is visible through them. Put three to five drops of e-liquid into those ports, turning the coil as you go so none are missed. The cotton at the top of the coil deserves a drop too. The aim is for every visible fibre to darken and look wet, without pooling.
Then fit, fill and stand it upright. With the coil seated in the base, fill the tank and leave the whole thing standing vertically. Liquid from the tank keeps being drawn into the core of the cotton by capillary action, reaching the parts your drops could not.
That passive phase is what actually finishes the job. The drops wet the surface, the wait saturates the mass. The two steps complement each other and neither replaces the other.

The mistakes that ruin a prime
Impatience comes first. Fitting the coil, filling the tank and drawing straight away wipes out the benefit of the drops entirely, because the core of the cotton is still dry even when the surface looks glossy.
The opposite excess is just as damaging. Flooding the coil by pouring liquid down the central chimney, the tube the air travels through, does not prime anything. It causes gurgling, liquid in the mouth and seepage from the airflow slots. Liquid belongs on the cotton, not in the air path.
The third mistake is opening at the top of the range. Even well primed, new cotton has not settled into its flow rate. High power on the first puff outruns the liquid supply and starts the wear clock early. The fourth is using one routine for every bottle. A clear, thin liquid wicks quickly. A sweet, thick one takes longer and leaves more residue on the element as it goes.
Priming by hardware type
On a conventional tank with a removable coil, the full method above applies exactly as written, drops included, because the cotton is directly accessible through the wicking ports.
On a prefilled pod or cartridge, the coil is sealed inside the block and the juice holes are usually out of reach. Manual drops are then neither possible nor necessary: fit the pod, leave it standing upright for a few minutes and start with gentle puffs.
